Pine Wilt Disease Devastates Pine Tree Population

By Deborah Bartley Pine wilt disease is prevalent in on of the most popular trees in all the world, the Black Pine. For several years, this disease has been posing a severe threat to forestry in addition to the natural environment. Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the pinewood nematode, is the cause of this rapidly spreading disease. The Japanese black pine is extremely sensitive to B. xylophilus. This same nematode is known as an aboriginal inhabitant of the United States. The pinewood nematode kills many pine trees in North America as well. There is concern that it may also kill conifers, which has caused the European Union and other countries to police the import of all coniferous chips, sawn wood, and logs to defend their forests from the pinewood nematode and other pests. A report by the Korea Forest Service in 2005 said that the swift spread of pine wilt disease in South Korea could see up to 30 percent of the countrys trees disappear by 2112. Despite government efforts to control it, the pinewood nematode is devastating the pine tree population. For example, South Koreas Mount Geundsm in South Korea has become nearly bald, because a total of 1386 pines that were 70 to 80 years old were cut down to stop the spread of the disease. Branches from the infected trees are broken into pieces so that pinewood nematodes cannot live on them. All the twigs are burned and the roots sterilized at a high temperature, covered with vinyl, and buried in the ground. Fortunately for tree lovers, there are many disease resistant evergreen trees to choose from. The best alternative, however, is the Thuja Green Giant. These evergreens are great when planted as privacy screens, or just when lining your property. Originally bred at the nationally arboretum in Washington, DC, Thuja Green Giants are resistant to the diseases that kill off other evergreens. They are very adaptable to any growing conditions, and dont need to be sprayed for bagworms and borers. These drought tolerant evergreens can turn any lawn into a royal estate. Green Giants have been around the landscaping industry for quite some time, but have only recently found their way into the retail market and into lawns across America. Be sure to add this tree to your landscape if youve had problems growing trees before, or if you want a elegant privacy screen lining your yard.
