The Art of Listening - Market Research Tools That Any Company Can Use

By Jay Lipe For thousands of years, people have conducted market research. I dont mean with fancy focus groups or complicated conjoint analysis, but just by asking questions and listening to the answers. Using this art of listening is so crucial to the success of your companys marketing, that to deny it is to invite failure. Follow along as I show you how to use marketing research to funnel knowledge into your marketing programs. Why research is so important In the early 1990s when I started my own consulting business, I conducted my own little research survey. I wrote on a piece of paper a 100 word description of what my consulting practice would look like that included 1) The target audience for the practice 2) What these buyers wanted from a consultant and 3) How my practice would be different from others. Then, I set up coffee appointments with 20 business leaders, and put this written description in front of them. After asking for their feedback, I sat back and listened.
Their advice was invaluable. I learned that my positioning, focusing on growing companies without an in-house marketing department, was on target (it remains my positioning today). I also learned that clients like these were less interested in hearing about my Fortune 500 work experience and more interested in knowing how I would help organizations their size. Because of this research, I believe my companys marketing ended up being more focused and targeted. Research can also perfect products A short while ago, I worked with a major company that was launching a brand new zero-turn radius riding mower. New to this market, the company and I wanted to perfect the products design before launching so we organized a series of consumer focus groups. Up to this point, I had been working with the internal design team to develop a product prototype. We were supremely confident that we had designed the right product for the market, and saw the research as a mere rubber stamp for the design. However, when we showed the prototype to the focus group participants, we were shocked by their reaction. Almost every single participant didnt care for the front end design. Flimsy and breakable were two words that we heard often, and words that clearly didnt support the brands positioning. During the next week, we scrambled to redesign the front end and hastily organized a series of one-on-one research interviews with these same participants to get feedback on the new design. In the end, they loved it and, as of this writing, the product has been launched successfully and has contributed significant, incremental revenue to the company. But I shudder to think what might have happened if we had launched the product in its original design, without this research. Im convinced the product would have bombed, costing the company millions of dollars and tarnishing its reputation. Research can deepen relationships Whatever the size of your company, youll find that research strengthens the bonds between your company and its buyers. The bottom line is: people like it when you ask for their opinion. Not only will they feel they are contributing to your companys success, but youll learn more about their perceptions of: * Your company identity *Your competitors * New markets and products for your company Research firm TARP has found that for every person that complains, 26 others dont. So, if 10 customers have complained recently to your company, another 260 may have held their tongues while turning to your competitors. Properly conducted research many times acts as a feedback machine designed to root out these peoples thoughts. Other important research payoffs * Research can reestablish dialogues with long-lost customers Sometimes a survey is all that is needed to reestablish a dialogue between a company and a customer that feels ignored. * Research gives people a chance to vent Sometimes people just want to air out their feelings. This doesnt mean they will abandon you or your company. To the contrary, they may respect you more for giving them the chance. * Research can find new growth opportunities right under your nose - A client of mine in the healthcare data industry told me a great story about his companys market research. It seemed that several years ago, his half million dollar company decided to survey its customers. One of the questions it asked was, "What new products would you like to see us offer?" Of the 90 responses it received, an overwhelming number said they would like to see the company offer market share data. The company moved quickly and within less than a year began offering market share data. The result? His business more than quadrupled over the next two years. * Research can increase awareness of ancillary products Good surveys not only collect data, but disseminate information. As long as it is handled tastefully, you can educate consumers about your companys new products or services with a survey. * Research can sometimes reactivate dormant customers - I once helped an industrial services client survey its past customers, ones it hadnt heard from in over a year. After asking for their feedback on the previous work, we included the following question: Do you know of anyone, in your company or outside of it, who could benefit from the services XYZ provides? The response was overwhelming. In the end, the survey generated over $700,000 in sales from both active and dormant accounts. The best low-cost market research tools * One-on-one interviews This is one of my favorite research techniques. In it, you (or better yet, an outside consultant) speaks directly with your companys customers, one at a time. Via phone or in-person, you walk the respondent through a standard questionnaire. Each respondent is asked the same questions and the interviews are designed to take less than 30 minutes each.
Here are some questions I like to use in these interviews: * At that time, why did you become a customer of our company? * With respect to (your industry) what are your biggest challenges you face? * How did you first learn about our company? * How does our company help you with these challenges? * Who are our biggest competitors that you deal with? What are their strengths & weaknesses? * What are our greatest strengths? Weaknesses? * What do we do that no one else does in the market? * What other capabilities or services would you like to see XYZ offer? * Which of our competitors do the best job of marketing? * Post purchase surveys To keep the lines of communication open between you and your customers, administer a quick customer satisfaction survey right after delivering your product or service. It will help your company keep tabs on how well youre doing with your customers, and can also head off potential problems. Given everyones preoccupation with time, I limit my companys survey to one page. Its a fax-back survey with just five questions, and 90 percent of all surveys are returned.
Here are some questions that can be used in a survey like this: -What one thing did you like about doing business with us? -What one thing would you change about our company? -When you bought our product, what did you really end up with? -On a scale of 1 to 10, please rate us on the job we did for you. -What would it take for you to stay with us for five years? * NetworkingThese days networking gets a lot of attention as a lead generation device, but I also see networking as a market research vehicle. Next time you, or someone from your sales organization, sets up a networking meeting, identify one piece of research information youd like to obtain. It could be something about your major competitor (e.g., What do you know about XYZ Company?) or something about your typical customer behavior (e.g., What additional services do you see customers in our market needing?) Gathering vital research information can sometimes be as cheap as a cup of coffee. * Blogs Blogs are a great way to encourage dialogues with your market. Savvy marketers are now using blogs to: -Elicit instant feedback from customers -Have simultaneous conversations with customers and prospects and -Facilitate the spread of buzz about your company. Ever since starting my blog (www.emergemarketing.com/blog), Ive noticed that it serves as a useful feedback device. I hear from experts far and wide, and dialogues can sometimes break out between them with me as the moderator. If youre interested in starting a blog, visit http://www.typepad.com/ or http://www.blogger.com/ . * Customer Clubs When I was the marketing director at a mattress manufacturer, each quarter wed host an informal conversation with our customers. Wed invite five to ten customers to our headquarters, and conduct a no-holds-barred conversation with them about our products and marketing. Boy, were they flattered.
Over popcorn and soft drinks, wed show them new product prototypes or share preliminary ad concepts. All of this proved extremely valuable in developing our product mix and marketing messages.
Just as important, these customers left the meetings with a renewed feeling of loyalty. Wed cared enough to ask for their input, and most were very appreciative of that. Id highly recommend customer clubs as a valuable (and cheap) way to gather market feedback. * Mystery shopping - Used widely by the retail industry, these studies hire an outsider to pose as a shopper at a companys store. Studies like this help your company identify strengths and weaknesses in the following areas: ** Store appearance ** Service quality ** Selling skills of your personnel ** Product selection ** Pricing To get the best results for this type of research, hire an outside firm and be very specific about the kind of feedback youre seeking. * Usability testing If your companys Web site plays a significant role in building the companys identity, you may want to consider usability testing. Usability testing determines how well users can interact with your companys website. In a typical web usability test, one or two users sit in a room and use the web site to perform certain tasks, while company marketers watch, listen, videotape or take notes. For more information on usability testing visit the Usability Professionals Association Web site at http://www.upassoc.org/ or read Steve Krugs excellent book, Dont Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability. One reason to use outsiders for customer research If your company can afford it, consider hiring an outsidereither a consultant or researcherto conduct much of this research. Many customers are reluctant to share their true opinions for fear of damaging the relationship. I have interviewed countless customers and prospects for my clients and Im always a little surprised at how open they are with me. Perhaps they feel more comfortable telling an objective third party person the unvarnished truth. Somw other tips on market research * Always thank respondents after a research session. Send flowers or just send a thank you note, but find a way to recognize the time and effort theyve sacrificed for your company. * Whenever possible, try to quantify research results. Phrase questions along the line of On a scale of 1 to 5, how important is it to you that __________. This produces data that can be quantified and is easier to draw conclusions from. * If your product is widely distributed, keep your eye on consumer feedback sites like e-pinions (www.epinions.com) and Amazon (www.amazon.com) . Some of the most valuable insights into your products will come from these sites because consumers are free to air out their true feelings, using their own words. In closing Ive spent over two decades in the marketing field and one thing I know about companies that are successful marketers is that they commit to research as an ongoing marketing strategy. If youre really serious about improving your companys identity, you must have a market research program in place. Beyond Just Smelling Nice - Bringing Medical Aromatherapy to the Masses

By Misty Rae Cech, ND Do you agree Aromatherapy has suffered from it's New Age stigma long enough? It's time to tell the masses what these little bottles of liquid jewels are all about! Here in the United States, common use of the term 'aromatherapy' has been skewed so much that only that 'touchy-feely' aspect of 'feeling good from smelling something nice' is it's complete definition to most folks. If you happen to know better, this article may just be a refresher in the science of therapeutic essential oil usage, but one that may help you teach others the 'why' of 'medical aromatherapy' - if this concept is new, however, read on and learn - this may be important to you someday! The word 'aromatherapie' was first used in 1937 by the French cosmetic scientist Rene Maurice Gattefosse after accidentally discovering Lavender oil's healing effects on burns he sustained in his lab. He was so impressed by the oils medicinal actions, he wrote a book it that began the modern aroma-'therapy' revolution. Medicinal use of essential oils is widely accepted in France today, where one can receive a prescription for a blend from their doctor, and have it filled as we do with pharmaceuticals here. The inhalation of essential oils to make one 'feel good' - is truely just one aspect of the practice; Aromatherapy includes the entire branch of medicine using volatile (easily evaporated) aromatic compounds naturally occurring in plants. Some consider the most important actions of essential oils to not even be associated with the sense of smell. Beyond acting on through the olfactory senses, essential oils have been shown to have effects ranging from broad spectrum anti-microbials and anti-virals to inflammation reducers and even tissue regenerative properties. Essential oils effects on the nervous system an psyche through the olfactory sense is not to be discounted, however. Studies have shown repeatable results in essential oils' ability to lift the spirits and sharpen the attention. Students inhaling Lemon and Rosemary essential oils while studying have scored better on tests; other subjects have slept better while inhaling Lavender (one article proclaimed these results with "Lavender Works Better than Benzodiazepines !"). The 'aromatic' effect of essential oils is a result of the intimate wiring of the smell sense with certain control systems of the brain. The olfactory system is the only one of the five senses directly connected to the bulk of your grey matter - the rest are routed first through the thalamus. This direct connection has powerful implications for physiological as well as psychological effects. The olfactory sense is closely tied to the limbic system, which is the center of emotions, plays a significant part in the formation of memories, and affects our sexual responses. The olfactory region also connects to the hypothalamus, which in-turn controls the entire hormonal system through it's influence of the pituitary gland. One can easily imagine an olfactory sense receptor being stimulated by the mist of an essential oil resulting in downstream stimulation of the brain in a certain way - stimulating, sedating, relaxing, or otherwise - depending on the molecular form of the oil. Though we shouldn't get distracted by the wonderful possibilities of aromas! The physiologic effects of essential oils are far more extensive than if used through the smell sense alone. Medical aromatherapy includes topical application, oral ingestion and natural suppository use of aromatic oils as well. Due to their molecular shapes and sizes, essential oils are remarkably compatible with human physiology. They are easily absorbed and well tolerated, for the most part, in small amounts. Essential oils are not cure-alls however, or placebo-effect-inducing nice smells - they are potent plant medicines, each with significantly different actions. Oregano oil is one of the most broad spectrum anti-microbials known; at the same time, it takes knowledge and skill to employ it properly as it is a strong skin irritant. Melissa oil has been hailed as a cure for Herpes Simplex virus infections by German researchers. Ginger oil has brought relief to sufferer's of motion sickness, rheumatoid arthritis and intestinal parasites - but not to those with the Herpes virus. The list goes on; the take-home message is that oils CAN be effective if used properly, and improper use can not only be ineffective but even dangerous. That doesn't mean essential oils are something to be afraid of - they deserve the respect given to any powerful medicine. Consult a qualified professional for ANY serious condition, and consider using essential oils if and when appropriate. Broad acceptance of true 'medical aromatherapy' is a ways-off in the US. There is a lack of knowledge within the established medical community, and qualified aromatherapists are fairly rare, as of yet. With the growing body of evidence validating the efficacy of natural medicines, however, and the failing confidence in our allopathic medical institutions, it may not be long until essential oils find their rightful place in our medicine chests. In the meantime, be cautious, have fun, and do stop and smell the roses, and lavenders, patchoulis, sandalwoods, and all the other great aromatherapies available to you! Funerals - Japanese Buddhist Customs - Part 1

By Michael Russell In this first of a two part series we're going to discuss Japanese Buddhist funeral customs. What most people don't realize, even those familiar with Buddhism, is that Japanese Buddhist funeral customs differ from region to region. There is no one custom that encompasses all of Buddhism. Therefore, a generic description will not be possible. The religion of the deceased also plays a role in the burial ceremony. Also the person's age and social status, as well as economic situation, affect how they are buried. Even though the services themselves are different based on the above factors, there are some customs that are the same or similar throughout. What follows is a brief list of the common elements to a Buddhist funeral. First there is the washing of the body. The body is washed at the hospital and then the body openings are stuffed with cotton. In ancient times the family washed the body but now that is done by the hospital. The body is then dressed in a suit or kimono and a cosmetic specialist will apply makeup. From there the body is taken to the place where the wake is to be held. Then there is choosing the arrangements for the service. The day is chosen as well as the type of alter that is to be used. Food that will be fed to the guests is also decided on. Gifts are also chosen to give to those who come to the service. Of course a casket is also chosen for the deceased to be buried in. The body is then prepared for the service. Just prior, it is put in dry ice at the mortuary, The next of kin then stay with the body until it is time for the service. People from the mortuary then come and place the body in the casket. One of the unusual items put in the casket with the deceased is money to pay for the toll across the River of the 3 Hells. This is of course symbolic. Also, any items that the deceased was fond of during life are put in the casket. The body is then placed in front of the main altar if the ceremony is to take place at the mortuary hall. If the wake is to take place at home then the body is placed in front of the family altar. The next step is to set the home up so that friends of the family can pay their respects. A table is usually set up at the entrance of the home or hall. A few people are usually stationed to greet the people who come to pay their respects. Each person signs his or her name in the registry book. The guests then present their condolence money, called koden. This is placed in a special envelope that has a thin black and white ribbon wrapped around it. The amount depends on the relationship of the person to the deceased. The amount is written on the outside of the envelope. Meanwhile, at the altar, incense is burned and a cushion is placed so that guests can kneel in front of the alter and pay their respects. The visitor then pays their respects to the family and then goes into another room where food is served. In our last part of this series we'll continue with the wake, the funeral and the cremation.

Fat Loss Meal Plans - Fat Burning Foods To Help You Lose Weight

By Kris Bierek Fat loss occurs when there is a caloric deficit in relation to calories in vs calories out. Your basal metabolic rate takes in consideration your body functions and how much that burns alone, which on avg is 1200 but this figure depends on a few factors which can differentiate each persons individual BMR. The activity you add to this versus the food intake will overall balance to a surplus or deficit. For a fat loss you want to see a deficit but within reason. If you do not get in enough calories you then alter the effect and will gain weight due to the result of your metabolism slowing in response to the lack of calories needed. Eating every 2-3 hours is the basis of this diet which helps keep that metabolism burning your fat stores and not having to concentrate on the food you're taking in. Lack of activity combined with lack of attention to diet causes your body then ignores fat stores and works on what you are eating, packing the rest of the excess calories away for a rainy day since it feels you are not eating frequently enough. Starvation or limiting meals while drastically lowering your daily calories will sabotage your results slowing the metabolism in turn packing fat. In other words, do not skip meals! Your choices for complex carbs should be brown and black rices, tubers such as potatoes and yams as well as grains such as oats and quinoa. -3/4 cup with lunch and dinner is optimal. Between lunch and dinner you can have other carb sources such as beans, carrots and squash, or yogurt with fruit. The fibrous carbs are a must. Dark leafy greens and items such as green beans, asparagus, and broccoli and mustard greens should be eating 2-3 times per day. Breakfast is always easy with choices like egg whites, protein shakes, and oatmeal. Pre and post workout depends on your goals and factor on protein or 50/50 type shakes. I say if you want to burn fat, eat a good meal after your workout, items such as listed above. A few hours before bed is a great time for a protein powder and water drink to help with muscle recovery. This is not going to cause you any fat gain at all. Lastly you want to ensure you include some Omega fats into the diet in the forms of olives, avocado and the best choice being almonds. Use this guide to set up a meal plan, here is a sample fat burning meal plan: Breakfast - oatmeal and 3 egg whites with a small banana Snack 1 - no fat plain yogurt with cup mixed nuts and berries Lunch - chicken breast or fish fillet with 2 cups greens and no fat dressing along with cup brown rice. Snack 2 - 2 plain rice cakes with a tsp almond butter per pc and cup to a cup chopped broccoli Dinner - large fish fillet of cod or snapper steamed with 1 cup (measured cooked) mustard greens and spinach plus a small potato or yam Snack 3 - protein drink This will help you with some serious fat loss!!! Keep it strict and you can expect an average of 2 lbs per week or 8-10lbs in a month. Kris created ShapeFit.com to provide quality health and fitness information to people from all over the world. About Bextra and Problems that Can Appear

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Groshan_Fabiola] Groshan Fabiola If you experienced serious side effects because you used the drug called Bextra, you can search for an attorney, to help you get compensations from Bextras producer.
There are a lot of qualified Bextra attorneys, and they are ready to help you, so that you can make a legal claim for damages. There were made studies, and it was discovered that among the patients who used Bextra, the number of heart attacks or strokes was 2.19 times greater than among patients that used placebo. It was found that Bextras risks are even higher than the risks developed by Vioxx, another drug belonging to the same class of COX-2 inhibitor drugs.
However, it was known from previous studies that the COX-2 inhibitor drugs can create heart troubles. This category of drugs was developed to cure pain without causing ulcers. Although studies revealed that Bextra has serious side effects, and can provoke the apparition of heart attacks and strokes, Bextras manufacturer, Pfizer replyied that these accusations are unsubstantiated and must not be taken into serious. It also said that especially because they havent been published in a medical journal, the studies that were made should be categorized as irrelevant and unsubstantiated. In 2004, because it was proven that Vioxx can cause the apparition of serious cardiovascular events, this COX-2 inhibitor was recalled from the market. Just a few weeks after this event, Pfizer, the producer of Bextra announced that two clinical trials showed heart bypass surgery taking Bextra developed a higher risk of stroke and heart attack. A regular use of Bextra can lead to the apparition of a heart attack, or cardiovascular problems like angina, congestive heart failure, stroke or high blood pressure.
If that happens, you should contact an experienced and qualified lawyer, preferably one that had similar cases before.
You must know that you can receive compensations from Bextras manufacturer, but for this, you need immediate legal assistance, provided by a good lawyer.
Also, it is good to know that there might be time limits within you must file your lawsuit. If the time limit expires, it is possible that your claim for damages will not be taken in consideration. Usually, before starting a treatment using Bextra or other COX-2 inhibitor drugs, the doctor should discuss with the patient, tell him about the side effects, and together they should analyze if the benefits this drug brings worth the exposure to the risks. The doctor should take in consideration patients opinion too.
Another thing that the patient should do is to be very vigilant, and to tell the doctor right away if he experiences any symptom. The doctor will know then what should be done, and it is possible that he will change the medication. If you want to find out more resources about

Depression Medication

By David McEvoy Depression can affect any one of us at any time of our lives and is more than just feeling a bit fed up or down in the dumps. When you cannot just snap out of it and the symptoms of depression persist for more than a couple of weeks, and interfere with your ability to carry out your normal routines on a daily basis, then your health care provider or GP may prescribe some form of medication to help you combat the depression. There are many different types of anti-depressants available and the earlier ones include Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). Newer types include Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and others, which may not fall into one specific category but which all work by impacting on the chemicals in the brain that are responsible for our mood and how we feel. The following list represents the most commonly prescribed drugs for depression, their brand names and the name of the pharmaceutical company producing them (in brackets), as well as a brief description of how the different types are believed to work. Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) Tricyclic antidepressants are so called because of their molecular structure in that they contain three rings of atoms. Although no one understands exactly how they work, it is thought that the beneficial effects are due to their ability to balance the natural neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain. The most common side effects are dry mouth and drowsiness and possibly blurred vision, sweating, and a slight hesitancy when passing urine. The following list represents some of the most commonly prescribed Tricyclic antidepressants: Doxepin - Brand names: Adapin (Lotus Biochemical Corporation) and Sinequan (Pfizer Inc)
Clomipramine - Brand names: Anafranil (Geneva Pharmaceuticals)
Nortriptylene - Brand Names: Aventyl (Eli & Lilly) and Pamelor (Novartis Pharmaceuticals)
Imipramine - Brand Names: Tofranil (Novartis Pharmaceuticals)
Protriptyline - Brand Names: Vivactil (Merck & Co)
Trimipramine - Brand Names: Surmontil (Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals) Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) This type of medication works by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which in turn increases the levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. They are not prescribed as often as they used to be as the newer type of medication known as SSRIs have become more popular. MAOIs would usually be prescribed when other medications have proved ineffective. MAOIs can interact with foods containing tyramine and raise blood pressure; they can also interact unfavourably with many other drugs and over the counter preparations. Some MAOIs include: Isocarboxazid - Brand Name: Marplan (Oxford Pharmaceutical Services)
Phenelzine - Brand Name: Nardil (Pfizer Inc)
Tranylcypromine - Brand Name: Parnate (Glaxo Smith Kline) Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) SSRIs work by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain so that levels of serotonin are increased. They are generally considered safer than other types. Side effects include nausea, anxiety, sleep disturbances and sexual dysfunction. They can also interact with other drugs. Some of the more commonly prescribed SSRIs include: Citalopram - Brand Name: Celexa (Forest Pharmaceuticals)
Escitalopram - Brand Name: Lexapro (Forest Pharmaceuticals)
Fluoextine - Brand Name: Prozac (Eli & Lilly)
Fluvoxamine - Brand Name: Luvox (Solvay Pharmaceuticals)
Paroxetine - Brand Name: Paxil (Glaxo Smith Kline)
Setraline - Brand Name: Zoloft (Pfizer Inc) Some other types of medication There are other types of medication available for depression which are not included in the previous categories but which all work in various ways to alter the balance of chemicals in the brain to alleviate depression. For example: Bupropion works by inhibiting the reuptake of both norepinephrine and dopamine. Often used to treat the type of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), as well as ADHD and as part of a stopping smoking programme. Brand Name: Wellbutrin (Glaxo Smith Kline) Duloxetine works by inhibiting the reuptake of both serotonin and noradrenaline (SNRI). Brand Name: Cymbalta (Eli & Lilly) Venlafaxine Also an SNRI. Brand Name: Effexor (Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals) Maprotiline Known as a tetracyclic antidepressant because its molecular structure consists of 4 rings in a T shape. Brand Names: Ludiomil (Novartis Pharmaceuticals) Which type medication is most suitable? The type of medication prescribed by your GP will depend on many factors including the kind of depression diagnosed, the severity of the symptoms, other medication that you may be taking and of course the potential risk of any side effects. It is not possible to predict with any degree of accuracy which one will be most effective and it can take a number of weeks for any effects to be noticed. If after six weeks or so there is no improvement, then another medication may be prescribed until you find the most appropriate one for you. Regardless of the type of depression diagnosed, the right medication can alleviate the symptoms of depression and help you get back to your old self again. Depression is a serious condition that can strike anyone at anytime. For more information about depression and self help come and visit =>Fighting Depression. Save Thousands Of Dollars By Choosing The Right College

By Todd Johnson With the high cost of a college education, no one wants to pay more than they must. Yet thousands of families pay too much for college every year because they don't understand the basics of financial aid and don't know the right questions to ask. So let's learn the basics and then what questions to ask. Basics Part I There are three types of financial aid for college: grants or scholarships, loans and work-study. Grants and scholarships are free money that you do not need to pay back. Most grants and scholarships come from the federal and state government or from the individual college. Loans need to be paid back after college. There are many loan programs available from the federal and state government. Most of these loans have fairly low interest rates. There are also private loans available although these generally have a higher interest rate. Work-study is a job offered on the campus of the college. Basics Part II Need based aid vs Merit based aid Need based aid is given by all colleges to students who have need. Anyone who can't pay the full cost of the college has need. A form called the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) determines the amount of need for federal grants and scholarships. Many highly selective colleges also require a form known as the Profile form The FAFSA form is filled out after January 1 of the year the student will first attend college. The FAFSA and Profile forms ask questions about the income of the parents and student using information that you gave on your tax returns. These forms also ask questions about the amount of money you have in savings or investments. The Profile form is more detailed than the FAFSA form. Once these forms are completed the government uses the FAFSA form to determine how much your family can pay for college. This is your expected family contribution or your EFC. Your EFC is the same regardless of the cost of the college. Similarly the individual colleges who use the Profile use that form to determine what your family can pay for college. Your need is the cost of the college you are looking at minus your EFC. For example, if you are looking at a college that costs $20,000 a year and your EFC is $5,000, your need at that college is $15,000. If you are looking at a college that costs $40,000 a year your EFC is still $5,000. Your need at this college is $35,000. Merit-based aid includes scholarships typically for students who have good grades or have some other special talent such as athletic or musical talent. Most highly selective colleges offer little or no merit-based aid. Finally, in looking at colleges you should ignore the cost of the college. Yes, you read that right. Ignore the stated cost of the college when you are first deciding which colleges to investigate further. You will see why later in this article. So now you know the basics. Now comes the fun part: How to save money by asking the right questions. Questions to ask the colleges Question 1- What percent of my need do you meet? Remember that EFC, or expected family contribution that the FAFSA determined? Some colleges will meet 100% of your need. Need again is defined as the cost of the college minus your EFC. So what does it mean if a college says they will meet 100% of your need? It means that once the FAFSA or Profile form has determined how much you can pay for college, the college will pay 100% of the rest of the bill. Colleges will typically meet the need you have using a combination of grants, loans and work study. Most colleges will award work study and loans first and if there is a need after that, the remaining need will be supplied by grants. The colleges will typically have a standard loan and work study amount that they award and you should ask about what these numbers are when investigating the college. Let's see an example of a financial aid award from a college that provides 100% of need with a student who has an EFC of $5,000. Total cost of college $40,000 Expected family contribution $ 5,000 Need $35,000 Financial aid award Work study $ 2,000 Loans $ 4,000 Grants $29,000 At a college that meets 100% of your need you pay $5,000. But what happens if the college doesn't meet 100% of need? Many less selective colleges don't pay the total amount of need that their students have. Let's use the example of our imaginary college from above only this time assume that the school only provides 90% of need. Total cost of college $40,000 Families expected contribution $ 5,000 Need $35,000 This college only provides 90% of the $35,000 need or $31,500. Thus, your out of pocket expenses are the $5,000 EFC plus an additional $3,500 for a total cost of $8,500. This example makes it easy to see why a school that meets 100% of need is often a better financial aid deal than a school who doesn't meet all of the families need. Many of the most expensive private colleges meet 100% of the students need while cheaper public colleges usually meet less than 100% of the need. This means that for many students it can be cheaper to go to an expensive private college than to attend a cheaper state school. Until you know what percent of need the college meets, don't eliminate a college from consideration just because it is expensive. Question 2- Do you have merit based aid? Many colleges that don't meet 100% of a students need do offer scholarships for some students. If your student is near the top of the application pool for a less selective college they may get some money if they qualify for merit based aid. Thus, in some cases, if the student is willing to look at a less selective college, they may get a better financial aid package. Here are some questions you should ask if the college provides merit aid. How many merit awards are available? What is the value of the merit awards available? What are the qualifications to receive one of these merit awards? This works even for families that don't qualify for need based aid at all. If your student can qualify for a merit based award you won't need to pay the full stated cost of the college. Question 3- How is financial aid determined after the first year? Some colleges have a policy of providing good financial aid for the first year and then substantially reducing the grant aid in the following years while increasing the loans. You should ask the college in which you are interested how they determine financial aid after the first year and what the average loan is after the first year. While it is typical that the amount of loans will increase each year if the increase is substantial you will want to take that into consideration. Question 4- What is the average loan amount at graduation of those students who have loans? This question will give you the best indication of the amount of loans that this college requires compared to other colleges in which you may be interested. Although most students will have some loans when they graduate, you don't want this amount to be any more than necessary. Question 5- What is your policy regarding outside scholarships? Most colleges will subtract money earned in outside scholarships from your financial aid package. Some colleges will reduce the loan burden by the amount of the scholarship, but other colleges will reduce your grant money. If the college reduces the amount of loans you have to take out that is a benefit to you. There is no benefit to you if the college reduces the grant aid. Question 6- What is your packaging policy? Most colleges give a financial aid package that includes grant money, loans and work study. But each college combines this money differently. Specifically you want to know: What percentage of an aid package from your college is grant vs. self-help (loans, work study)? The greater amount of grants versus loans and work study the better for the student. Do you have a preferential packaging policy? Preferential packaging occurs when a college gives a better financial aid package to a student with a stronger academic profile than to another student with the same financial need but with less academic credentials. Question 7- What is your four year graduation rate? What difference does a college's four year graduation rate make? This is an important question that many people never consider. Another way to phrase this is, How many years of college am I going to have to pay for? If the college has a high four year graduation rate, you will most likely only have to pay for four years of college. However, if the college graduates most students in six years then you can plan on paying for six years of college, not four. Conclusion Now that you know something about financial aid, including the questions to ask each college you are considering, you can make an informed decision in paying for a college education and hopefully also save some money. Hand Quilting - Only For The Passionate Ones

By Clive Jenkins The history of hand quilting was written by all women who have dedicated their time, passion and skills in creating true masterpieces from simple pieces of fabric and thread. Those women were building something marvelous and timeless every time they stitched one piece of textile to another, one memory along all the others. This is the true meaning of hand quilting: the more work you put in it, the more valuable your quilt will be. If we make a short trip back in time, in the 18th or 19th century, we will find out how different the women of those times were living. Practically, a woman had to know how to make herself lots of necessary things for daily house activities, such as clothes, bed linens, cooked food, quilts and even soap. They did not have the facilities that modern women have today, like linen stores, restaurants and supermarkets. The modern technology made possible for today's women to spare their already busy schedule for things like hand quilting. Hand quilting was a tradition in the 18th and 19th century, not just a hobby as many of you might think. All mothers were teaching their daughters the secrets and the complicated techniques of hand quilting. Generation after generation, this passion was transmitted and taught, keeping it alive and improving with time. The material proof of hand quilting were the quilts, every one unique in its own way, and truly representing the spirit of one's family for generations, passed from grandmothers to mothers, and from mothers to daughters, in a strong and continuous line of dedicated women. Quilts represented a great way to imprint and keep alive the ancient traditions, the family's spiritual heritage. Every quilt had a story; it was not made just to keep warm in cold winter nights. The hard work of hand quilting had a higher purpose: to enchant the eye with exquisite patterns, to be functional for the entire family and to say the story to the following generations.
If you decide though to follow the original technique of hand quilting instead of using the modern technology, you will need a lot of practice. You will see that in time, your technique will gradually improve and you can obtain a unique hand made quilt. Usually, the quilts are made from cotton, but you can use any kind of fabric you have or any combinations. Cotton is recommended because it does not stretch and can be easily ironed. After you decide what kind of textures you will use, you must prepare them. Wash them in luke warm water with a light detergent to remove the color excess and to avoid the shrinking.
If the colors bleed, use for the quilt only fabrics with similar colors. You can combine successfully the colors in a quilt if you use fabrics with different nuances, dark colors and accents of another color used in the quilt. The quilt is like a sandwich formed by three lairs: the front lair, the middle lair and the back lair. The front lair is the decorative one and it is realized from pieces of fabric sawed in an artistic and creative manner in blocks, than the blocks are assembled together. The middle lair gives the warmth and the thickness of the quilt and can be made from cotton, polyester or wool. The backside of the quilt is usually made from a single textile piece or it can be assembled from many decorative blocks, such as the front. Hand quilting requires some additional tools: a pair of scissors, number 8 or 9 needles, thimble and dark colored thread that can help you see the stitches better. (Cotton or poly-covered cotton).
When you begin to work, find a comfortable place to sit, with a good light, because you will need plenty of it if you want to do the stitches right. You can practice your stitches slower in the beginning and increase the speed when you will feel surer of your hand. If you enjoy hand quilting, you will find it easy and fascinating and you will have the satisfaction of something you have done yourself, even if it doesn't come perfect from the first time. Weight Loss Motivation - 4 Effective Ways To Encourage Yourself To Lose Weight

By Andy Jefferson A lot of people quit in the middle of a weight management program because they have lost their weight loss motivation. After a few weeks of dieting and exercising, it is normal for people to start losing some interest in what they are doing. In fact, during the first few weeks of a weight reduction program, a lot of people would decide that they do not want to continue because they are no longer interested. If you are one of those people who have lost their enthusiasm about their weight program, you should find a weight loss motivation. Remember that if you quit, you will never be able to shed off that extra weight off your body. Besides, if you have already invested money in your weight reduction program, you investment will simply go to waste! Setting reasonable expectations According to weight loss trainers, you should keep your expectations reasonable and realistic so that you will not lose interest easily. Focusing on short-term goals is very effect when it comes to motivating people to continue with their program. For instance, you set a goal of losing at least two pounds per week. Since losing two pounds in a week is very realistic and easy to attain, you will be motivated to work towards that goal. Aside from focusing on short-term goals, you should focus more on your activities rather than your weight. If you give your whole attention on the amount of calories that you eat versus the amount of calories that you burn during your daily exercise routine, you would mostly be more motivated to go on with your program. Having an ideal body image To keep you in the right track, you should keep an idea body image for yourself. Having that mental picture of yourself looking slim and healthy is a powerful weight loss motivation for you. If you need some visual image, find somebody whose body you admire and keep a picture of that person in your room. Tell yourself everyday that someday you will look like this person. The power of suggestion always work especially when you repeat it constantly. Working with a partner One of the best ways to motivate yourself you continue your program is to have a partner. If you do your diet and exercise all by yourself, you will easily get bored and then stop. If you have partner who is also into the same weight loss program, dieting and exercising becomes a social affair so you are less likely to lose interest. According to studies, working out with a partner or a team is more effective. Having a support group where you can share your diet and exercise troubles is a good way to keep toy interested. Rewarding yourself Rewarding yourself for your achievements is a weight loss motivation. Set a goal for yourself and once you achieve that goal treat yourself to something that you have always wanted to. For instance, if you have been planning to go to the spa and relax, make that as your reward for yourself. Tell yourself that if you achieve your goal for the month, you will treat yourself to the spa. HowToGainMuscleMass provides weight management information and expert articles. Stress at Work in the UK

By Julian Hall There can be much unhappiness, depression ill health and stress which can be brought on by bad working conditions & unfair working practices. In many cases, there are good grounds for claiming compensation for stress at work For example: Unrealistic service levels or deadlines at work causing stress and depression The rise in sexual discrimination can lead to stress and depression at work An unclean work environment stress and depression at work The fear of continual racist abuse causing stress and depression at work Not allowing necessary breaks from work can often cause stress and depression at work Employees who become depressed at work through stress, they deserve to claim compensation What is stress? HSE defines stress as "the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them". Pressure is part and parcel of all work and helps to keep us motivated . But excessive pressure can lead to stress which undermines performance, is costly to employers and can make people ill. Why do we need to tackle stress? about half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress at a level they believe is making them ill; up to 5 million people in the UK feel "very" or "extremely" stressed by their work; and a total of 12.8 million working days were lost to stress, depression and anxiety in 2004/5. Employers should look at: developing appropriate and effective policy organising a risk assessment and benchmarking exercise developing appropriate training for managers and staff developing support structures and services as needed Bullying at work can be grounds for compensation There are many more causes of employee stress and depression at work. However there is some good news. You could be entitled to reasonable compensation if you are suffering stress and depression at work or have been forced to resign from work because of undue stress which has led to depression. **************************************************************** If you need advice or would just like to speak to someone, please dont hesitate to give Claims Master Group a call on 08000 71 22 71. Online Cosmetic Stores: Beauty And The Beautiful!

By Henry Kruz Jean Kerr once said, Im tired of all this non sense about beauty being only skin-deep. Thats deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas? If beauty is indeed skin deep, cosmetics can help you a great deal in enhancing it. Seriously speaking, no matter how naturally gifted we may be, cosmetics would always be required. In this case, the more you have, the more you want! Cosmetic stores in UK hardly ever experience a lean patch. But as competition reached its zenith and with the advent of all major cosmetic players in UK, they have to be on their toes all the time. Another serious blow was dealt to them as online buying of cosmetics became a trend. In recent times, e-shops selling cosmetics and cashback portals have been proving to be stiff competition for the high street retailers. The fact is recognized and the battle lines are drawn! Of late, all leading cosmetic merchants in UK, such as Avon, Clarins, St Tropez, Clinique, Guerlain, Bourjois, and LOreal have made their presence felt in the web space. They sell all kinds of makeup, skincare, bodycare, haircare, bath and shower essentials at much discounted rates for their online customers. Moreover, the cashback portals not just offer you cheap cosmetics, but huge cashback as well as a reward for shopping with them. In such a scenario, it is not strange for the high street retailers to feel the heat and press the panic button. They too join the fray and rest assured, there's gonna be just one winner and that isYou! Henry kruz is an associated editor to uk online market to provide the information on cosmetic stores in uk. Aroma Therapy: Get Cured With A Whiff

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tom_Cary] Tom Cary The origin of aromatherapy can be traced back to ancient Egypt. It was used in both ritualistic and medicinal practices. Even the Chinese medicinal practices are rich in cures with essential oils in acupuncture, massage, inhalations and baths. The ancient Indian medicinal system also deals a lot with the medicinal oils. Many aroma cures are practiced in homes and has become a part of common home remedies. Knowledge of aroma therapy and its scientific basis started after a French Chemist Gattefosse showed that essential oils can penetrate the skin and mingle with the extra-cellular liquids of the body which are then carried to the different organs. Other research has shown that the olfactory nerves that react to smell is directly connected to the hypothalamus. Hypothalamus controls the endocrine system which regulates growth, and other activities such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, body temperature and hunger. Basics of aromatherapy
Aroma of oils is extracted from various herbs and plants which help to bring the mind and body into a state of equilibrium. It helps in healing various metal and physical ailments. This oil from which the aroma is taken is known as essential oils which can be used to treat many ailments like depression, stress, arthritis, back problems, muscle aches, head aches, colds, sinus problems, skin disorders, asthma, digestion problems, etc. The essentials oils are many and information on the essential oils and aromatherapy info can be obtained from the internet. These essential oils evaporate easily and are used in many air fresheners. A vapouriser, potpourri burner, heating the oil on the stove or placing a few drops in steaming water can create a distinct mental and emotion atmosphere. Pure essential oils are extremely concentrated and are volatile. Most of these oils contain vitamins and minerals, some are natural antiseptics where as others exhibit hormone like properties. How to use these Essential Oils
Make your own perfume by adding these oils to other oils so that it does not evaporate fast. You could also add it to pure alcohol (ethyl) and use it like a perfume. Water is used in therapy quite often and using oils in bath tub while having a bath enhances the power of the oil. Do not add any other substance (foam, soap or other oils) to the water. Just add about 9 or 10 drops of essential oils and relax. The oil is absorbed into the skin and inhalation of the vapor is added benefit. For children and babies be sure to reduce the quantity of oil. You could also take a cotton and dab it with a little bit of oil and keep it in the room you are working in. Putting a drop or two of oil in the dust bin and in other vantage points in the room will permeate the entire room with the pleasant aroma. In case you are to use it for colds and inflammation of the sinus. Steamers that are made specially for aromatherapy can help. These steamers are used even for other ailments. Application of the oil on the affected part is said to be beneficial in many remedies like arthritis, muscle aches etc. Herbs for Aroma therapy

How To Punish Bad Behavior

By Jessica Rasmussen In todays society, we as parents are limited on the methods or extent that we are allowed to punish our children. However, we are still responsible for our childrens behaviors. This can leave parents feeling extremely frustrated and often helpless. While not taking sides on issues that are better left to politicians, I am a strong believer that kids can learn from, and be punished for, negative behavior without the need to for physical punishment. As a mother of 4 children I have faced almost every possible situation that would require me to punish one of my children. There have been times that they have tested my patience and self control. I believe however, that they are as well behaved as they are in part because I have chosen to not use physical means of punishment. In fact, it is important to note that different behaviors warrant different punishments. For example: When my oldest daughter takes advantage of her cell phone privileges and calls her friends or accepts phone calls from her friends when she is suppose to be in bed, she loses her phone privileges. While if my youngest son were to run out in front of the street he would receive a verbal scolding and be put in time out. The severity of punishment also depends on how many times an offense was committed. The First Offense: Lets take the example of my daughter using her cell phone when she is not supposed to. On the first offense she will lose her phone for 1 day. Children are very intelligent and often explaining to them why they are not allowed to do something will prevent repeated offenses. The Second Offense: Kids are kids however, and if you are a parent you know that there are times when you simply cannot get through to your child on an adult level. In this example, increasing the duration of the original punishment will usually suffice. Removing cell phone privileges for 2 days or more can often stress the seriousness of your point of view. Be aware however, once you enter into this phase of the punishment, you are beginning a battle of wills. Children often test their parents and will not follow your rules simply as a way of contesting your authority. Most often they do not even realize why they are not obeying. This is yet another reason to avoid physical punishment if possible. Regardless of the age of the child, removing an item or activity that they like for an extended period of time is punishment enough. My youngest child has special needs and for some children you will need to be especially patient. NOTE: It is important to mention that during the second phase of punishment, consistency on your part is paramount. You MUST follow through with any warnings or threats that you have issued. This can be difficult, especially when it would be easier for you to give in to you child. For example: If your child has a birthday party coming up and you know that even if you tell your child that they may not attend because of something they have done, but you intend to let them go the whole time, you are not doing anyone, especially yourself, any good. If you tell your child that they cannot go to the birthday party, you need to have already decided that they are not going to go and expect them to beg, plead and cry when the day comes and stick to your guns. The Third Offense: The third offense is the most important and severe offense, requiring unique and inventive ways to punish your child. At this point, your previous methods of punishment have not worked and you need to think outside the box to find an effective way to impart the importance of being obeyed. All testing of the parent is done and this is the point where you put your foot down and take severe, but gentle, action. Lets refer back to the example of my daughter using her cell phone at the wrong time. At this point, I have expressed my expectations and demonstrated that not obeying my rules results in negative consequences for her. Having removed the cell phone for a few days at a time I have demonstrated that continuing the wrong behavior results in her losing the cell phone. For the third and FINAL offense I remove the cell phone permanently. All privileges are revoked and the cell phone is cancelled or sold. It is important to note that the third offense is the last offense. Your punishment should reinforce that concept, removing the ability for your child to repeat the offense. In time, your child will learn that once they reach the second offense, they had better not test you any further. You will start to see that, while they will continue to challenge your authority through the first offense, your child will rarely repeat the behavior a second or third time. Consistency: Again, it is important to mention how important consistency and patience are. Just as you are training your child to follow the rules you set, you must also train yourself to follow through and remain calm. You should NEVER lose patience with a child. Stick to your rules and punishments and over time, your child will begin to comply with your rules without thinking about it. Unsecured Loans with No Credit

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Julie_Mann]Julie Mann Lenders label individuals with no credit history as 'high risk'. Being considered 'high risk' can be the 'kiss of death' when it comes to getting approved for unsecured loans. Why? Because unsecured personal loans require no collateral. So, the lender loaning you your money is trusting you that you will make timely payments. This is not a personal issue of trust, it is a credit issue. Lenders do not want to lend unsecured loans to people with no credit or bad credit, period. By now you are asking yourself, 'How do I turn my no credit history into a positive one so that I can apply for a personal loan?'. Easy! Being labeled 'high risk' makes it hard to get approved for certain types of loans and credit, but not all. Did you know that car loans are one the best means for building credit? How? When you take out a car loan, you are securing your loan with the car that you are financing. If you don't make the payments, you lose the car. So, lenders are much more inclined to provide car financing to people with no credit before they approve an unsecured personal loan. Another great way to build your credit history is to apply for a credit card. There are a few credit cards available that are specifically designed for people with no credit and bad credit. Be careful! You don't want to put yourself into debt with use of your new credit card. You want to make a few charges a month, that you can afford to pay for once you receive your bill. Utilizing and paying for a credit card will help build your credit very quickly. A third means of building credit is to put some utility bills in your name. This means having the phone, electric, gas and/or water bill put in your name, making you responsible for the payments. Again, you want to make the payments on time, every month! Doing so will also help build your credit fast. If you follow two of the above suggestions, you should be able to build a non-existence credit history into a good credit history in about one year. Then, when you need a little extra cash for a vacation, shopping, etc., you can apply for and hopefully get approved for personal loans. Coin Collecting A Rewarding Hobby

By Charles Roman One remarkably rewarding hobby, in more ways than one, is coin collecting. Though it may not have the same visceral excitement as, say, hang gliding, it has a subdued joy that is more than worth the experience. The simple joys of finding a coin youve been looking for or discovering a mint-condition penny from forty years ago is a pleasure that is not to be missed. While this may be difficult for some to understand, coin collecting is a reward all its own and, for those who do it, there is nothing else like it. To understand the pleasure of coin collecting is to understand the pleasure of discovery. You do not collect coins just to have metal lying around, you collect coins to find something new. This is because, with the number of coins minted around the world, there is always something new to discover. There are always more coins, more designs, more commemorative editions, and more periods in history to explore. Which means that completing a coin collection is impossible, because there are always more coins to collect. However, it is not only the coins themselves that make coin collecting so enjoyable. There is also the fact that there is always something more to learn about coins and coin collecting. The joys of discovery are not only in the coin shops, they are also in the mind. With every article, book, or simple observation there is something new to learn, ponder, or finally decide. The exploration of topics and knowledge has its own rewards and coin collecting provides plenty of opportunity to do just that. Of course, coin collecting has more tangible rewards as well. Coins do tend to increase as the years pass on, so there are monetary rewards in addition to the mental rewards. And there is a certain excitement in finding a unique coin that is worth a whole heck of a lot of money. And, when you do manage to do that, you not only get the satisfaction of discovering something unexpected, you can keep it for its investment potential over the long haul. After all, rare coins are not getting any more common, so they are only going to increase in value over time. So, with all these exciting facets to a coin collection, how do you actually start with coin collecting? The best thing to do is to just start looking through the change you have on hand right now. After all, all the coins that are now being collected were once change in someones pocket. So start with the coins you already have, learn about them, and then move out from there. And, as you collect more coins and learn more about them, the continual process of discovery will be its own reason for continuing your explorations. Then, when you finally discover the joys of simply collecting coins for the sake of collecting coins, you will be able to assemble an impressive set of coins that will be an investment all its own. Which will make a lot more people happy about the fact that you enjoy coin collecting so much.
